A candlelight vigil was held on Tuesday evening at the DBHSS Basketball Court in Wokha town to mourn the demise of a 22-year-old basketball player, whose untimely death on October 25 has sent shockwaves across the state.

The programme, chaired by Mhabemo E Murry, General Secretary of the Wokha District Basketball Association (WDBA), began with an invocation by Rev Fr Stephen, Principal of DBHSS Wokha, followed by the lighting of candles in remembrance of the departed.

Delivering address, M Renthungo Mozhui, President of the WDBA, expressed grief over the loss of the young athlete, describing her as a “promising and rising basketball player in her early twenties, whose passion and dedication to the sport had inspired many.”

He recounted that the young woman’s body was discovered under suspicious circumstances, “We are deeply shocked and outraged by this brutal and senseless act which has robbed us of a young life filled with hope and potential,” Mozhui stated.

Condemning the incident in the strongest terms, he urged the authorities to conduct a swift and impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. “This heinous act is not just an assault on an individual, but on the very spirit of sportsmanship, dedication, and hope that she represented,” he added.

He further called upon the community to remain united against hatred and violence, and to strive towards building a society where every young person can pursue their dreams safely and fearlessly.

As the vigil progressed, the gathering joined in the soulful hymn “Amazing Grace” performed by Nchumbemo Patton, creating a poignant atmosphere of reflection and solidarity. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from the chairperson.
