Wokha observes World Hepatitis Day

WOKHA, JULY 30 (MExN): Wokha observed World Hepatitis Day with the theme “It’s Time for Action”, with Dr. Zubenthung Kikon, Chief Medical Officer, Wokha, as the theme speaker on July 30, at CMO Conference Hall. 

Dr. Zubenthung emphasized on the importance of creating awareness on Hepatitis among the public. He further explained on the transmission and causes of the disease and informed that testing and vaccination are two key factors in order to prevent the spread of hepatitis.

According to a press release, a power point presentation on Hepatitis was delivered by Dr. Chumdemo Kikon, MD Medicine, District Hospital, Wokha. He gave a brief introduction on Hepatitis disease and its effect on the liver. Dr. Chumdemo mentioned that among the types of Hepatitis, A and E are acute hepatitis which can be transmitted through food and water, while Hepatitis B and C causes liver cancer. The disease can also be transmitted during blood transmission or organ transmission, unsafe injection and during surgical procedure, he added.  Dr. Chumdemo urged the pregnant women to get tested for Hepatitis B, and informed that the government is making effort to prevent the disease by providing free vaccine for Hepatitis B to a new born child within 24 hours of delivery in government health facilities.

Scenario of Hepatitis cases in the district was presented by C. Lideno Tungoe, Peer Support Educator, NVHCP. The program was chaired by Lichumo Odyuo, DPO, DAPCU Wokha and vote of thanks delivered by Mhonbeni Ezung, DPM (NHM).
