In commemoration of World Environment Day, the Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) of Wokha village hosted a programme at the Wokha Village Council Hall on Wednesday.
K Vandan Erui, Chairman of Wokha Village Council, delivered a speech focusing on the theme of “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” expressing concern for the global ecosystem. He lamented the transformation of fertile land into desert expanses, attributing such changes to human recklessness and improper agricultural practices.
Erui also advocated for terrace cultivation coupled with efficient water irrigation, emphasising the need for sustained land use to mitigate desertification and enhance soil fertility.
Furthermore, he proposed extensive tree planting initiatives within the Mt Tiyi Reserved Forest to rejuvenate Wokha town’s ecology and underground water resources.
Zuchanbemo Lotha, Vice President of JFM Wokha Village, delivered a keynote address during the event, conveying messages from the village’s elected representative, MLA Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe. The programme culminated with a collective pledge to safeguard the village’s forests and ecosystems, followed by a communal effort to engage in mass social work and tree plantation activities across the Wokha Village area.
The Old Riphyim Village Council conducted a mass social work and plantation drive within its jurisdiction, planting 350 trees and fruit plants to promote sustainable living in harmony with nature.
Rhanbemo Y Patton, VDB Secretary, lauded the active participation of village members. He highlighted the community’s annual commitment to tree plantation drives, particularly during World Environment Day.
Airfield Colony, Wokha Town residents also engaged themselves in a collective social work effort, cleaning road stretches and utilising backhoe loaders to widen roads and clear obstructions, extending the World Environment Day celebrations beyond the traditional boundaries.
