Wokha, May 19 (MExN): To commemorate the lives of individuals who have died from AIDS related illnesses, District AIDS Protection and Control Unit (DAPCU), Wokha, People Living with HIV (WNP+), and partner Non Governmental Organizations organised an International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service with the theme “We Remember. We Rise. We Lead" at Tenyimia Baptist Church, Wokha on May 18.
A press release from Chief Medical Officer’s office Wokha stated that the event featured speech on HIV & AIDS scenario of Wokha from Yanchibeni, Counselor FI-ART. Representing the HIV infected individuals, Abeni, WNP+ President Wokha shared her testimonials emphasizing on the treatment options and importance of understanding and addressing the stigma associated with the disease.
Dr. Thungchanbemo Ezung, Chief Medical Office (CMO) Wokha, while addressing the significance of the day, briefed the participants on the history of the first AIDS Memorial Service held in 1984, initiated by activists and community leaders as a way to honour the growing numbers of individuals affected by the AIDS crisis. He also urged the participants to recommit in fighting stigma, promoting prevention, and advocating for access to treatment and care.
The programme concluded with a silent prayer and Candlelight Vigil in memory of the individuals lost to AIDS, creating a powerful visual representation of hope and remembrance. In conjunction with this programme, a free HIV Screening booth was set up for voluntary testing promoting HIV testing, education and prevention.
