KOHIMA, JUNE 14 (MExN): After the formal inauguration of the Nagaland State Commission for Women, on March 28, 2007, the members of the commission have been involved in several activities around the state. The press release issued by the Member Secretary, Abeni TCK, highlighted the visit of the Commission to the Kohima Jail and Mental Hospital on April 12, 2007, to ‘study the condition and treatment of women living in the respective facilities’. Again on April 17, the NSCW members inspected the TB hospital and in the absence of inmates, it decided to suggest that the hospital be better utilized as a hospice for HIV/AIDS patients managed by the State government.
The NSCW also visited Peren and held a consultation meeting with women groups in the district and discussions were held on adequate funds to be made available in VDBs and DRDA for women and intervention of the commission on the same. Also discussed were the need for health facilities and additional doctors in the district hospital, wider publicity of Janani Suraksha Yojana scheme which gives Rs. 1400 as incentives to mothers delivering in health institutions. It was the general consensus that issues of gender disparities be addressed by various departments.
The Commission also attended the Regional Seminar on Land Resource Rights of Indigenous Women in North East India held at Itanagar on June 7 and 8, 2007. The Seminar brought forward recommendations seeking gender justice in land and resources for Indigenous women in the region.
The release also stated that three consultative meeting had been held so far on the framing of the State Policy for Women by the Commission with Department of Women Development officials NSSWB, noted lawyers M. Therich, Judicial Megistrate including Registrar, Guwahati High Court, Kohima Bench Khesheli Chishi, Kilemenla Moa Member, NPSC, Rosemary Dzuvichu, Expert member, National Commission for Women and Chozule Kikhi, Researcher at Asian Institute of Technology. NSCW added that the draft copy of the Policy had been made and the final draft would be deliberated during the workshop on the State Policy for Women which would be held soon with stake holders and all heads of government department. It informed that the policy would then be sent for adoption by the State government for women in the state.
The members of the Nagaland State Commission for Women led by the Chairperson Sano Vamuzo also undertook several tours to various states for familiarizing themselves with the functioning of the Commission for Women.
