Kohima: A textile and weaving project introduced by the state’s department of women development fetched high admiration from many quarters. The textile and weaving project aims to capture the best design and weaving practices of Naga women, enhance the skills of women, stimulate the production of local fibre and yarns as well as provide support and assistance to the community weavers.
“Through research and documentation of traditional Naga motifs, styles and designs and incorporating them into modern designs; the project works to conserve millennia old spinning, weaving and dyeing methods integral to Naga cultural history and identity, and at the same time new techniques/technology is being employed to produce Naga themed modern apparel,” stated the annual administrative report of the department tabled in the last assembly session here.
The report stated that latest computerised dobby and jacquard looms are being utilized to promote more efficient production, adding that latest digital printing technology have also been introduced and with the induction of highly qualified fashion designers, graphic designers, weavers etc. Naga themed modern apparel have been designed and developed from locally produced fabrics.
The report also stated that so far 120 Self Help Groups (SHGs) have undertaken silkworms rearing in a bid to provide raw materials and six clusters for spinning and weaving in six districts have been developed.
