Women reservation in local bodies gets approval

DIMAPUR, JAN 26 (MExN): In a significant move, Nagaland Governor Shyamal Datta, known as a fighter for women’s rights, has notified reservation of seats for women, scheduled tribes and scheduled castes in the municipalities of Kohima, Dimapur and Kohima, and 16 town councils of the state.

In the provision laid down by the Nagaland Municipal Act 2006, out of the total 229 wards against 2, 92,171 ST populations of 19 councils, 177 wards, accounting to a total of 45.76% are reserved for schedule tribes.

As such, The Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act 2006, by approving 35.37% reservation for women in the local bodies, shows a positive impact of creating gender equity in the state with 81 seats reserved for women out of 229. Out of the 81 wards, 66 seats are for women from the ST category. It appears that this reservation made by the government not only shows the government’s concern for women, but it is also an encouraging factor for the women themselves. It is an opportunity for women not to remain in a desolate state but to take chances and prove their efficiency.
