Kohima, February 13 (MExN): One day awareness programme on early identification and Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act 2016 was held at Red Cross Conference Hall, Kohima on February 13, for the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers.
The workshop was organized by National Institute of Orthopedically Disabilities, Kolkata in collaboration with Social Welfare Directorate, CMO office, MD NHAK Kohima and Cherry Blossoms Society. Thejawelie Gregory Sote, DC Kohima shared on the need to have proper mindset and positive attitude towards people with disabilities.
Educating the communities and different stakeholders are very necessary, he said and reiterated the gathering to “give our time, attention, suggestion and direction on how to best manage the people with disabilities.” The contribution of ASHA and Anganwadi workers are very important as they are at the grassroots level and first contact point to any stakeholders, the DC added.
Diethono Nakhro, Disability Commissioner Nagaland underscored the need to have better understanding on disability by the grassroots level. Constant learning through work-shop and seminars is very necessary to disseminate knowledge so that no discrimination takes place, Nakhro observed, and said that accessibility needs to be addressed by all government building and public places and ensure that laws and rules are set in proper places.
Atoli, Joint Director, Social Welfare Department also spoke on collaboration with different departments and private sectors. A Patra spoke on Introduction to Disability & Rights to Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, Sreeja Mitra spoke on Early Identification & Intervention and Monali spoke on Prosthetics & Orthotics. Members from National Institute of Locomotors Disability (NILD) also spoke on various subjects of disability. Adaphro Pfozhe and Viesienuo Chusi from Cherry Blossoms spoke on Inclusive Education. Sankara Narayan, Bethel Masiha Church, Bethel Medical Center invoked God’s blessings and D Adani pronounced vote of thanks.
