Dimapur, April 22 (MExN): The Department of Linguistics and Centre for Naga Tribal Language studies (CNTLS) in collaboration with University of North Texas, USA organised a two-day international workshop in Language Documentation and Annotation at Nagaland University on April 22 and 23.

The workshop commenced with an inaugural programme with Prof AK Mishra, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus as the special guest and Prof Shobhana Chelliah, Uinversity of North Texas, USA as the main resource speaker.  

According to a press release received here on Friday, Dr Imlienla Imchen, Assistant Professor, CNTLS chaired the programme; Dr Pangersenla Walling, Associate Professor, HoD, Department of Linguistics addressed the welcome note and a keynote address was delivered by the resource person where she emphasized on the importance of language documentation and data archiving. She stated that we need a whole team of people to document a language not just a linguist.

Prof Chelliah further added that archiving data digitally is important as it makes it easily accessible to all the people and community. She also stated how archiving data digitally can help preserve both language and culture of a community permanently. She encouraged all the participants to come in board for language preservation as it is important in many aspects and not just preserving a language, the release stated. 

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr L Bijenkumar Singh, Assistant Professor, Dept of CNTLS, NU.
