Kohima, April 27 (MExN): A two-day workshop aimed at co-developing the Morung Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Teachers’ Handbook for Nagaland concluded successfully on Friday at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Conference Hall in Kohima.
The workshop, jointly organized by the SCERT Nagaland and Bangalore-based non-profit Dream a Dream, brought together key stakeholders from the Directorate of School Education (DoSE), Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), and the Dream a Dream team. Participants collaborated to create a culturally relevant and practical SEL resource for teachers handling Classes 3 to 12.
The programme was inaugurated by SCERT Director Kevirale-u Kerhuo, who, in her welcome address, emphasized the urgent need to integrate SEL into the state’s education system. "Social Emotional Learning is crucial to creating safer, more inclusive, and emotionally responsive classrooms," she said, while highlighting the importance of teacher capacity building.
Facilitated by Revanna and Venu from Dream a Dream, the workshop adopted an experiential and participatory approach. Sessions included reflections on findings from a recent need assessment on student well-being in Nagaland, approaches to curriculum design, and the initial structuring of the Morung SEL Handbook. Participants developed a preliminary framework for the handbook, strengthened inter-departmental collaboration for SEL integration etc.
The Morung SEL Teachers’ Handbook aims to equip educators with strategies and tools to support student resilience, emotional intelligence, and holistic growth, particularly in the face of socio-economic challenges, conflict, and limited infrastructure.
As the development process continues, SCERT, DoSE, NBSE, DIETs, and Dream a Dream have pledged ongoing collaboration to ensure the resource is contextually grounded and practically applicable.
