
Mon, May 5 (MExN): A series of workshop to address Violence against Women & Children were jointly organized by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) and Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) on May 3 and 4 in Mon.
The participants included Village Council Representatives, Women organizations, Church leaders, NGOs, students and community leaders.
Vrinda Shukla, IPS, SDPO, Mon addressed the need to be vigilant while sending their children away as domestic help or for education to towns and cities, urging them to register details with the police so that they can regulate them to ensure prevention of violence and crime.
Thavaseelan K, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Mon, shared the importance of the community leaders to be well informed about the laws and government schemes available so that they can take active steps against injustice within the community themselves and also educate each other so that all can come together and act against violence.
Bano Vinito, Chairman, NSSWB reminded them about our strong sense of community as an asset and to use this strength to restrain and restrict such violence. She further urged the student’s union to take charge and keep record of their own children leaving the village so that violence and trafficking can be prevented. A good step would be to ensure the monitoring of teacher absenteeism and work towards improving the quality of education, she added.
R. Wilford, IAS, SDO, Mon reminded them about the value of raising their children within their own guardianship. Lomei, KNSK President, pointed out several incidents of children being abused and urged the public to ensure all children are connected to the tribal bodies in the districts they are sent to. The representative of the KSU reiterated their commitment to the issue of child domestic help.
A workshop on Child Rights was exclusively conducted with principals and teachers of educational institutions. Another session on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, with the Head of Departments and other officials, followed. Samuel Kapu, DCPO, Mon, also spoke about the services available via the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS). Moba, Panel Lawyer of DLSA spoke on the services of the Nagaland State Legal Service Authority. These Workshops were conducted with special reference to Women Helpline 181, One Stop Centre and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
Poster campaign and community awareness were carried out by the Women Helpline 181 across Mon Town and neighboring villages from May 2 to 4.
