Kohima, March 15 (MExN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO), Kohima Law College & Pro Bono Club jointly observed World Consumer Rights Day at college auditorium on March 15.
Press & Media Cell NVCO in a press release stated that a skit was presented by Nocklei M, Shahyong & Yakap Shankai highlighting various conduct of traders in exploiting consumers in the market while buying goods and availing services including unfair means of practices by the meat sellers especially shortage in weight. Muwali Sangtam, Wanjen & Huluto also made short presentations on various topics related to consumer rights.
The main speaker of the day, NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi in his address said ‘Right to Public Services Legislation’ in India comprises statutory laws which guarantee time bound delivery of services for various public services rendered by the Government to citizen and provide mechanism for punishing the errant public servant where is deficient in providing the service stipulated under the statute.
Savi stated that this legislation is meant to reduce corruption among the government officials and to increase transparency and public accountability. Already more than 14 states had enacted this legislation where Madhya Pradesh became the first state to enact ‘Right to Service Act’ in 2010.
The common framework of the legislations in various states includes granting to right to public services, which are to be provided to the public by the designated official within the stipulated time frame. Some of the common public services which are to be provided within the fixed time frame as a right under the Acts, included issuing caste, birth, marriage, domicile certificates, electric connection, votes card, ration card, copies of land records, etc.
The function was chaired by David faculty-in-charge of Pro Bono Club and attended by college administrator, faculty and law students.
