Asserting that animal husbandry is one of the backbones of our economy, Dr Kewelelo Mero, Deputy CVO, Phek told students of Nazareth School, Pfütsero that “we want many of you to be veterinarians and animal activists.”
He was addressing the World Veterinary Day organised by the Chief Veterinary Office, Phek under the theme “Strengthening Veterinary Resilience”. He said that the day celebrates the importance of the one health concept and approach focussed on the realisation that animal and man live interconnected lives.
Towards this end, he also pointed out that “their existence depends on each other for companionship, protection, safe and nutritious food products, work related and recreational activities, the biodiversity of our wild life, research and new knowledge to better our lives.”
Highlighting how the world veterinary day came into being, he further said it is observed to recognise the contribution of veterinarians in the field of health care and medical science. “The welfare of animals is intrinsically related to the well-being of human beings and ecosystem,” he said.
Through their work, dedication and commitment, he also remarked that veterinarians make the world a better and safer place for both animal and humans to live on.
Meanwhile, Dr Esther Krocha, Veterinary Surgeon, Phek noted that “taking care of animal health, we indirectly take care of human health.” In her chairperson's remark, she also highlighted that “World Veterinary Day is a day to promote the veterinary profession and work on improving animal and human welfare, the environment, food safety, animal transport and quarantine.”
Highlights of the event included invocation and welcome note by Rev Fr Lancy D'Costa, Principal, Nazareth School Pfütsero, a PowerPoint presentation on “Animal Welfare and Prevention of Cruelty to Animal” by Dr Shipatu Thupitor, VAS Meluri while Dr. Lhuveta Nyekha, Deputy Director, Phek proposed the vote of thanks and Sr. Elizabeth, Headmistress of Nazareth School, Pfütsero said the closing prayer.
In commemoration of the World Veterinary Day, an essay writing competition on the topic “Veterinarian as I see it expect” was also held for class 10 students of Nazareth School, Pfütsero wherein Vesülü was adjudged the winner and Cheliso-ü Khutsoh and Leneiu Lasuh were placed in the second and third place respectively.
Judges for the essay competition were Vishü Rita Krocha, poet, journalist & publisher and Chetso-u, Assistant teacher, Nazareth School, Pfütsero.
