Son of late Khatu Puro of Kikruma village in Phek district. Vechopra was a prominent wrestler back in the 1970’s and also a retired teacher by profession who represented erstwhile Phek Sub-Division Wrestling in 1971 (later known as Chakhesang Wrestling Association) to the Nagaland Wrestling Tournament (now Nagaland Wrestling Association) held on 20 May 1971 at Kohima. Vechopra was passed away at the age of 84 years on October 7 at Nikos Hospital, Dimapur.
Meanwhile, the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) mourned the demise of the later.
The association fondly remembered his contributions and sacrifices towards Naga traditional wrestling. This was stated in a condolence message issued by CWA president Vezohu Ruho and general secretary Kukhoto Venyo.
The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) also mourned his loss. In a condolence message issued by the NWA’s media cell, it was noted that Lt. Puro was among the 20 Chakhesang wrestlers who participated in the first Naga Wrestling tournament under the Nagaland Wrestling Board on May 20, 1971, at the local ground in Kohima. He represented the Wrestling Board of Phek Sub-Division, now known as the Chakhesang Wrestling Association.
Puro was the first wrestler to compete in the state-level Naga traditional style of wrestling and made significant contributions to the promotion of the sport. A retired teacher, he dedicated himself to educating young people in various forms, earning the gratitude of the NWA and the entire wrestling community for his selfless service. The NWA has expressed solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult time and offered prayers for Lt. Puro’s soul to rest in eternal peace.
