WYSF for urgent action on recent violent incidents

Lauds police dept’s swift intervention; demands arrest of the absconding perpetrators

Dimapur, July 30 (MExN): The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) today lauded the swift and immediate intervention of the police department in the suspension of personnel involved in the death of an individual during a ‘hot pursuit’ on 25 July, but also demanded the arrest of the absconding perpetrators allegedly involved in a related incident.

“The truth about the alleged crime committed or caused to be committed by the deceased and his accomplices can be established only after the arrest of the absconding perpetrators and an impartial inquiry is carried out, since the dead cannot defend themselves,” the WSYF stated in a statement.

The WSYF’s statement followed the Dimapur Police's clarification on 29 July that the deceased, identified as one Ngukavi Yeptho, was a prime suspect in a recent highway incident on 22 July, which included robbery and alleged sexual assault of a female victim.

The highway incident reportedly occurred on the four-lane highway under Showuba Village, while the ‘hot pursuit’ by police personnel occurred near Kuhuboto.

In view of the clarification, the WSYF, while lauding the department’s action, urged the law enforcement agencies to show no complacency in bringing this matter to its just conclusion.

“The notion that this incident can be labelled as an accident is unacceptable, and taking a precious life under any circumstances cannot be justified,” it asserted.

Accordingly, the Front reiterated its demands that all individuals, irrespective of rank or position, involved in the “unlawful encounter” be brought before the law and made to face its due process to meet the ends of justice.

Meanwhile, the WSYF stated that it is “utterly disgusted” by the news of abduction, robbery, and sexual assault as reported by the police and expressed its deepest condemnation of the reprehensible actions of the group of men who “sexually assaulted a woman and robbed her and her friend of their belongings.”

“Such acts are utterly abhorrent and have no place in any civilised society. Sexual violence is a grave and serious offence that leaves a lasting trauma on victims and erodes the very fabric of our society,” it added.

It is not just a violent crime but also a gross violation of individual dignity, security, and a fundamental human right, it underscored.

Accordingly, the WSYF stated that the truth regarding the incident can be established only after the arrest of the absconding perpetrators and an impartial inquiry.

Hence, it called upon the law enforcement agencies to take swift and decisive action to ensure that justice is served and also directed all its units to assist the law enforcement agencies in apprehending the absconding perpetrators.
