Yimchunger community in Kohima celebrates Medümneo

The Yimchunger community of Kohima under the aegis of Yimchungrü Union Kohima (YUK) celebrated Medümneo festival at The Naga Heritage village, Kisama on August 7.

The festival was celebrated with strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Medümneo festival is the premier festival of Yimchunger Nagas.

Celebrated in the first week of August annually after the harvest of millet, the festival is marked by with prayers for the departed souls.

It is a ceremony for the dear ones who left for their heavenly abode during the year.

The festival is spread over 5 days and has separate names for the days- Shito, Zhihto, Zumto, Khehresuk and Sheresuk.

Addressing the celebration at Yimchungrü Morung, the special guest L Thronghokiu, Chairperson Nagaland Bio-Resource Mission urged the people to reason together and to “learn to say ‘thank you’ and ‘sorry’ to each other for a congenial co-existence.”

He also challenged the people to live up to the principles of honesty and affection as practiced by the forefathers. Further, he urged the people to keep political differences aside and work together for a common cause.

Khrolalie, Mission Director, Nagaland Bio- Resource Mission also delivered a short speech.

YUK executive chairman Hanji spoke on the significance of Medümneo festival.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by YUK Vice President Akumba while welcome address was delivered by YUK Advisor T Kejingkhum.

Vote of thanks was proposed by YUK General Secretary T Kiusangthong.
