Dimapur Government College observes 52nd foundation day

Morung Express News Dimapur | July 25   On October 27, 1965, a group of 16 concerned citizens from Dimapur held a meeting about starting a college to cater to the academic needs of the citizens. The result of the meeting was fructified on July 25, 1966 when the Dimapur College was established under a private management. The college started with 83 students and seven teachers on roll. Later, in 1989, the college was taken over by the state government and renamed as Dimapur Government College (DGC). Today the college stands as one of the premier institutes in the state producing toppers besides imparting holistic and all round development to the students.   On Wednesday, DGC observed its 52nd Foundation Day at the college auditorium with Former HoD, English, DGC, K. P Avikasit as the guest speaker.   According to the Principal DGC, Kavili Jakhalu, it was the first time that the College was observing its Foundation Day in a different manner. "DGC's tryst with destiny took place 52 years ago in a ramshackle old building with railway tracks on one side and a noisy bazaar on the other side. Against all odds, DGC today has emerged as a premier NAAC accredited college in Nagaland,” she informed. She attributed the progress and success of the college to the founding fathers. A minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the founding fathers.   The Principal informed that the College struggled to survive as an institution especially during the transition period from a private to a government college.   Guest speaker, K.P. Avikasit who was involved with the college since inception spoke on “DGC then and now” and shared anecdotes of the past days, how things functioned and the humongous changes seen now. He recalled how mass copying during examinations; damaging college infrastructure, use of guns etc were prevalent at one point of time. “At one point of time, the college had to expel 100 students,” he recalled.   He encouraged the students to develop their own roots and inculcate the values which education was supposed to inculcate in them. “You are truly educated only when you give back to society," Avikasit said and added that education was not only about scoring high marks. He also advised students to inculcate the habit of raising questions inside classrooms with an inquisitive mind.   “Students today have all information at their fingertips with the advent of technology and we must accept the fruits of development by positively coming up to that similar level,” he added.   Faculty of the college gave away awards to winners of different categories during the programme.   Award Winners in different categories: 1.
