27 year old Neingupe Marhu has won the hearts of the people for voluntarily cleaning the streets of Pfutsero town. He has converted his maruti van into a dumper for the sole purpose of removing garbage from various corners of the town.

The only dumper vehicle in Pfutsero town has been non-functional since the beginning of the year.  The Pfutsero Town Council was also dissolved in the first week of January due to the municipal elections and the dumper vehicle has reportedly stopped functioning ever since.

When weeks and months of garbage began to pile up, Neingupe Marhu could no longer bear to see his town filled with waste everywhere.

Committed to his mission to keep Pfutsero clean, he has been on the job for the last 7 days and is still at it. “On the first day, it took me 21 trips to clear the garbage of the whole town”, Neingupe Marhu told The Morung Express. The dumping site is located about 2-3 kilometers away from Pfutsero town. It does not bother him that he has to shell out money from his own pocket to pay for the fuel or that he himself has to collect the garbage from several points and eventually dump it at the site.

“For me, if the town is clean, that is the greatest reward”, he stated. “Sometimes, a few well wishers offer me a sum of Rs. 10 or 20 for the fuel and I am thankful for that”, he added.

Many citizens of Pfutsero are impressed by the noble work that this young man has initiated out of his own freewill and concern. Towards this end, Director of Kalos Society, Pfutsero, Kupelhi Losou expressed: “it is really encouraging to see him doing this job. Many of us would not like to do jobs like these- collecting trash, it is difficult for us.”

He also enlightened that the Pfutsero dumper was functioning smoothly before the town council was dissolved and now falls under the care of the administration. “We have been fighting for it but so far, our requirements have not been met. We have been told that the tires of the dumper need replacement but said they are not in a position to buy a new one” he put across.

However, appreciative of Neingupe Marhu’s selfless contribution, the Director further added: “I personally know him and he is a very disciplined man, clean, tidy and a really humble human being. He wants to help the public and I wish many of us will follow in his footsteps.”

A senior officer in Pfutsero also observed that the waste has been lying there for months and nobody has taken the initiative but this man, personally contributing to the society. He went on to say that it is a ‘social responsibility’ while lauding the good work that Neingupe Marhu has undertaken.

It may be noted that Neingupe Marhu hails from Lasumi village and currently serves as a constable under the Police Department in Pfutsero. Off duty, he invests all his extra time in keeping Pfutsero town clean.
