One youth was assaulted, allegedly, by members of a Naga Political Group (NPG) in Zunheboto on August 2. The victim, identified only as Dick, was admitted to the Zunheboto District Hospital on Tuesday evening. It sparked a rumour that the victim succumbed to the beating but the Zunheboto police confirmed he was alive and stable, under medical observation.
The police arrested two NSCN-R members but their identities were not disclosed. Anticipating angry public backlash, they were placed in a safe location. It was, however, informed that the situation in Zunheboto town was stable.
According to the police, the victim, in his 20s, is a beef retailer by profession and hails from Natho Old village. He allegedly intervened/mediated during a heated verbal exchange between two groups of people, who belonged to two different NPGs, said to be from the NSCN-R and the Kitovi Zhimomi-led GPRN/NSCN. The quarrel ended and he reportedly returned home, to be later picked up by two individuals. The quarrel occurred at around 3:45 pm.
The alleged NSCN-R members took him into custody, blind-folded him and whisked him away to a village adjacent to Zunheboto town, where he was assaulted. He was released by the assaulters some 1-2 hours later. He was found by passersby, who took him to the Y Rochill Hospital, from where he was relocated to the District Hospital.
As per the preliminary police inquiry, his condition was stable. “He is in a state of trauma, cannot ask him so many questions also,” said one police source.
Meanwhile, civil society organisations in Zunheboto came out strongly against the alleged assault. The Sümi Youth Organization, the Zunheboto Tokujo Kükami, the Zunheboto Area Public Organization, and the Zunheboto Town GB Association, taking “serious note of the incident,” urged the law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served to the perpetrators.
Condemning the act, it also informed of a joint resolution adopted, in the aftermath of the incident, banning “functionaries of the NSCN (R)” in Zunheboto district, for preventing such incident in future.
