Shamator, January 4 (MExN): The Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) continued its demand for the creation of a full-fledged Shamator district by closing down major tourism sites as well as the Likimro Hydro Electric Project (LHEP) on January 4.

Earlier on Monday, the YTC began its first phase of agitation on Monday by shutting down government offices and business establishments for three hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

On the second day of agitation, the YTC issued a public notice prohibiting government officials, researchers or tourists (both domestic and international) from visiting or conducting any activities at the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, Mt Saramati and the stone caves at Mimi and Salomi villages. Stating that “all sorts of activities at the aforementioned sites shall indefinitely remain suspended herewith,” it directed all individuals or officers currently stationed in those areas to “withdraw or exit within 24 hours” with effect from Tuesday.

Meanwhile, sources informed The Morung Express on Tuesday afternoon that Yimkhiung volunteers deployed by the YTC shutdown the LHEP indefinitely.

“The decision has been necessitated in resentment against the State Government’s failure to declare Shamator district,” YTC Executive Chairperson Y Makezho stated in the public notice.
