Zunheboto: The Zunheboto Town Business Union (ZBTU), through a communiqué, stated that the several press releases alleging the authenticity of its election by what it has termed as ‘certain vested individuals’ is completely false and baseless.

A release issued by its General Secretary Atovi Achumi stated that since the ZBTU is an NGO, the necessity to get the approval from the administration does no arise. “As such, under the presidency of Shikaho (the election) was held on 16/09/05. “The voting started at 10 AM and after 56 persons exercised their franchise, certain vested individuals instigated certain persons and hampered the smooth running of the election,” Achumi said.

During the voting, the former President had announced that the voting would proceed as scheduled but after a while, for reasons best known to him, he went absconding, according to the release. As a result, the House had reportedly empowered the then Vice-President Pihoto Awomi to act as the President after which voting resumed. Consequently, Khekato Yeptho was elected as the new President of the ZBTU.

In this connection, 367 traders held the first general meeting of the Union on September 24 at the Town Hall, Zunheboto and adopted two resolutions, Achumi further stated. Firstly, it was decided upon that the election of the new office bearers headed by Khekato Yeptho was final and binding and that re-election sought by ‘certain vested individuals’ would not be entertained. The participants to the meeting further resolved any circular, information, etc. issued by Shikaho would be considered null and void.
