Kohima, Oct 25 (MExN): Zeliangrong remains a successful model of social integration which the larger Naga community also aspires for, maintained Along Longkumer, Editor, The Morung Express while gracing the 30th annual conference of Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Kohima (ZSUK) here this morning at Indoor Stadium.
“I have come to learn that the Zeliangrong habitat is covering an area of more than ten thousands sq km spread across three states. But despite the cruel hands of history and the forces, which have fragmented your land, your people should be proud that you have not allowed physical barriers to come in the way of achieving a sense of emotional bonding. And at a time when deep division has engulfed the larger Naga community- the Zeliangrong people have much to contribute because of your own successful story and experiences of social integration,” said Longkumer.
The editor also stated that Zeliangrong have a unique model of how initially three tribes (Zemes, Liangmeis and Rongmeis), separated by a hostile geography and history, are today united by the bonds of common origin, kinship, cultural heritage. He also stated that disunity which has been further compounded by the virus of tribalism remains an issue of serious concern “for all of us.”
If Naga society, Longkumer said, is to move forward, it is important for all of us to reflect on where we are going wrong and quickly find a remedy. “We need to act now. Only we can determine our own destiny. We cannot leave this job to circumstances alone. As Nagas all of us need to contribute for the success of this dialogue,” he said and urged the Zeliangrong students to give suggestions on how to bring peaceful co-existence and social harmony to the divided nation.
The editor also suggested that the civil societies could organize inter-tribal cultural exchange programme on a sustainable basis. “People to people contact must take place to forge mutual understanding,” he added.
While also advocating that more commonalities among the Nagas be explored, Longkumer said “This will inspire a sense of unity, common political aspirations, common interests, common history and common destiny.”
He also maintained that ideology of a common identity has to be realized through various forms and manifestations if Nagas are to achieve social –political integration.
Expressing deep concern over the present scenario of HIV/AIDS in the state, the editor also urged the ZSUK to address such issues. Awareness and education for young people are crucial weapons to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, he said.
Touching on the career option in the competitive world, Longkumer suggested to the Union to set up a career counseling cell and bring in experts from outside so that the student gets proper counseling.
Earlier, Lt Col BC Sati, second-in- command, 26th Assam Rifles graced the occasion as guest of honor.
Lt Col Sati in his address urged the students to have a clear vision and excel in their respective fields.
Dr Hiabe also exhorted the gathering. Abuan Kamei said the invocation. Pausuidi Ndang, Speaker ZSUK delivered the welcome address while ZSUK General Secretary Agun Pamei tendered the vote of thanks. Special numbers and cultural dances also marked the occasion. Azin and Luilui chaired the function.
