In a significant development, Nagaland has, for the first time in an academic year, eliminated schools with zero enrolments and single-teacher institutions, according to the latest Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report released by the Union Ministry of Education.

The 2024–25 UDISE+ data shows a marked rationalisation in the school education system of the State.

While the overall number of schools increased marginally from 2725 in 2023–24 to 2750 in 2024–25, the number of schools reporting zero enrolment fell from 12 to none, added the report released on August 28.

Similarly, single-teacher schools, which numbered 31 in the previous year, have been fully phased out.

The elimination of such institutions also meant there were no students enrolled in single-teacher schools in 2024–25, compared to 368 in the preceding year. Likewise, teachers attached to zero-enrolment schools, who numbered 24 in 2023–24, were fully absorbed into regular functioning schools this year.

Teachers cross 33,000 mark
Nagaland’s teacher strength stood at 33,131 in 2024–25, an increase from 32,602 in 2023–24. This has kept the pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) at 13, well below the national average of 24. The PTR indicates the number of students per teacher, with a lower ratio often considered more favourable for classroom attention.

Despite the increase in teachers, the average number of teachers per school in the State remained unchanged at 12.

Total student enrolment rose slightly from 4,12,975 in 2023–24 to 4,14,421 in 2024–25. However, the average enrolment per school edged down to 151 from 152.

At the national level, India recorded 24.69 crore enrolments in 2024–25 across 14.71 lakh schools.

As per the Education Ministry, for the first time in any academic year since the beginning of UDISE+, the total number of teachers crossed the 1 crore mark in 2024–25 in India.

The total stood at 1,01,22,420 in 2024–25, as against 98,07,600 teachers in 2023–24, it added.

The average enrolment per school in the country stood at 168, with 7 teachers per school on average.
