Zunheboto still reeling from landslides; no compensation yet

Dimapur:  In a meeting that included MLA Hukavi Zhimomi, the District Planning Board (DPB) Zunheboto District has resolved to appeal and ‘invite’ the State Government as well as the Central Government to immediately dispatch an assessment team to Zunheboto to alleviate the suffering of the people effected by the recent landslides in the district. 

Informing The Morung Express of the latest developments in regard to the recent measures being initiated to alleviate the landslide effected families in the district, MLA Hukavi lamented that neither the State nor the central government inspite of repeated appeals for assistance, has yet to respond to the situation. “The landslide situation which is going from bad to worse, is beyond the efforts of the District Administration and the people needs immediate attention’ said the MLA. He further said that although the District administration, The Town Council, GBs and NGOs were endeavoring their best, more assistance particularly financially was required. “The effected should be compensated however still now not even a coin has reached the affected people; lamented the MLA. 

It is learnt that the aforementioned bodies are assisting in relocating, shifting materials and dismantling destroyed buildings. Also, a few individuals have donated some money to the people. According to reports almost a major population of people from four colonies/areas has been rendered homeless that certain homes have to be “allotted” at least a family landslide-effected. The National Highway in Zunheboto is also reported to be in a hazardous condition due to torrential rains.
