The Civil Defence Warden and Volunteers Training, organised by the District Commandant, Home Guards, Civil Defence and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Zunheboto, commenced on November 25 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Zunheboto.
The inaugural programme was chaired by SI Holloto Awomi, while the invocation was pronounced by Kavitoli Aye and welcome address delivered by Company Commander L. Vikheto Swu.
The week-long training will consist of practical sessions, lectures, and presentations aimed at strengthening disaster response capabilities among wardens and volunteers. With the theme “Medical Force Responder emergency method of rescue rope rescue method collapse structure search and rescue”.
Volunteers are coming from many different ways from Zunheboto wards currently undergoing the training.
The SP of Zunheboto Dr Kupe Kapfo, NPS highlighted the importance of being fully prepared for emergencies, emphasizing key areas such as first aid, evacuation and rescue, fire-fighting, and emphasised the main location for destructions such as telecommunications, hospital water sources, and power supply stations. He noted that preparedness should extend beyond bomb blasts to include fire-related incidents as well, stressing the proper use of fire extinguishers and the need to understand the nature of different types of fires.
He further reminded trainees that handling injured persons requires proper training, as improper care may cause additional pain or harm. Prioritizing victims during emergencies, he said, is a crucial skill every volunteer must learn.
Encouraging the attendees, the SP urged them to seize the training opportunity, stating that “a little knowledge can be dangerous,” and advised them to clear all doubts while undergoing training. He added that volunteers are the backbone of Civil Defence and their role is indispensable in disaster response.
Among the suggestions discussed, the SP emphasized the need to create a WhatsApp group for volunteers to ensure instant dissemination of information so that they can come and assist during the incidents. He also underscored the importance of identifying citizens with specific needs, especially during emergencies.
A total of 120 volunteers attended the first batch of training, while the second and third batches saw the participation of 240 volunteers from various colonies across Zunheboto.
