A total of 39 cadres of the Aadivasi People’s Liberation Army (APLA) have surrendered to the security forces in Assam. The cadres laid down firearms, explosives and ammunition at a surrender ceremony organised by the Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Assam Police on June 2 at the Bokajan Police Station, Karbi Anglong. The weapons were handed over to Brig SK Shukla, DIG 6 Sector, Assam Rifles and Devojyoti Mukherjee, IGP Central Range, Assam Police.

The surrendered cadres were led by Sahil Munda, Commander in Chief of the APLA. The APLA is a breakaway of the All Adivasi National Liberation Army, which entered into a peace agreement with the Government of India and Assam Government in September 2022. There were 7 other armed Aadivasi groups that signed peace accords at the time, but APLA was not among them.

A press release from the Defence PRO, Kohima, added that the weapons included 3 AK-series rifles, 19 pistols, 5 other rifles, 2 grenades and an assortment of ammunition. The release said that the surrender was a result of the “Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) and Spear Corps in conjunction with the Assam Police” relentlessly pursuing the homecoming of the cadres, who “have chosen a path of peace and prosperity under operation Samarpan.”

“With an aim to promote peace and harmony in the (North-east) region,” it said that the Spear Corps, headquartered in Rangapahar, Dimapur, have always endeavoured to “main stream the misguided youth,” who have taken up arms.

It appealed the youth of the region, who have chosen the wrong path to return to the “main stream.”
