Bru body slams Mizoram government over re-identification issue

Newmai News Network Aizawl | August 21   Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF), an apex body of displaced Bru families in Tripura, on Tuesday blamed the Mizoram government for “abruptly aborting” re-identification process.   During August 16 to 18, Mizoram officials conducted identification of Bru families whether or not they are willing to return to Mizoram. The officials also conducted re-identification of those families who have been left out during identification process in 2016.   MBDPF alleged that Bru refugees of relief camps were reluctant to turn up for identification as the Mizoram officials “declared publicly” that they came for collection of names of those who were willing to repatriate on August 25 and to conduct re-verification of those who were already identified in 2016 followed by re-identification of those families, who have been left out in 2016, which was against the term of agreement made by the joint monitoring group on August 10 in Tripura.   A leader of MBDPF said the Bru refugees were of the opinion that repatriation should start only after the completion of some works to be carried out by the Centre and the governments of Mizoram and Tripura. He also said that the Bru body on Monday wrote to Union Home Secretary, Rajiv Gauba informing him that the Bru tribals were willing to return after completion of the ongoing process of updating Aadhaar, population, opening of bank accounts, re-identification of left out families, conducting socio-economic caste census, revision of Bru rolls in relief camps.   In a letter addressed to the Home Secretary, the Bru body said that it had appealed to all the inmates of the relief camps to turn up during the identification process during August 16 to 18. However, the inmates could not turn up for the identification because they were 'busy' with updating Aadhaar, saving accounts and other important documents, the Bru body also said.   It then alleged that the Mizoram government had acted against the August 10 agreement as per which the left out families should be identified first. The MBDPF also alleged that the Mizoram officials refused to give identification slip or acknowledge slip to the inmates like before they received in 2016. It further accused that the officials did not want to issue any verification slip to the left out families, who were also not informed whether or not they have been accepted or rejected.   The Bru body then informed Gauba that although they have appealed to the refugees to turn up for identification, the Mizoram officials suddenly stopped the process and left for Mizoram at 11:50 am on August 18 due to which inmates could not turn up for identification.   Claiming that the inmates were willing to turn up for identification, the Bru leaders recently met Tripura officials and asked them to inform the government of Mizoram to re-conduct identification.   During identification process from August 16 to 18, Mizoram officials identified that only 2,560 out of 32,857 Bru tribal lodging at six relief camps in Tripura expressed their willingness to return to Mizoram. All the willing inmates comprising 394 families were from Kaskau camp, the nearest relief camp from Mizoram, officials said.
