Department of Agriculture holds State Level Training for women

Kohima, July 31 (MExN): A one day State Level Training organized by the Department of Agriculture under “Women in Agriculture” (RKVY) was held on July 30 at the Conference Hall, Directorate of Agriculture, Nagaland, Kohima.
Representatives from 11 districts participated in the programme which consisted of farmwomen from 30 Self Help Groups (SHGs) comprising of 450 farmwomen under the ongoing RKVY scheme.


The programme was chaired by Khrieseno Kikhi, SMS, Directorate of Agriculture who welcomed all and highlighted the purpose, strategies and inputs given by the Department under this scheme.

 
S Kivikhu Achumi, Additional Director of Agriculture reminded the participants to involve and benefit from this privilege and encouraged the womenfolk to keep continuing with farming even without aid from Government with a competitive spirit.


He further challenged them to go for better site selection for better production which will inturn help the whole community. 


Bendanglila Aier, Joint Director of Agriculture spoke on the topic “Empowerment of Women Farmers in terms of Seed Treatment and Preservation, Higher Crop Production and Economic Returns.”


Aier expounded on the role and status of women around the world and at home and pointed food, health, nutrition, education and income as the areas that women are indispensable and the areas women need to be empowered.
Jacob Yanthan, Joint Director of Agriculture acknowledged the strength women possess and encouraged the women farmers to continue working in harmony with other women for maximum productivity.


Each leader from the 30 SHGs presented their reports based on their past, present and future activities. The common activities included cultivation of various vegetables, vermicomposting, livestock rearing, fish culture, soap making, food processing for value addition etc.


The farmwomen shared their reports and looked forward to doing even more in the coming days. Vermi-compost demonstration was held and winter seeds were distributed to each SHG. 


At the Interactive Session, the womenfolk shared the challenges ahead of them and also expressed their gratitude to the Department for the constant support.


Vote of thanks was pronounced by the Chairperson who affirmed that the response of the farmwomen reflected the extent to which women can bring a revolution to production for sustainability and economic upliftment of the individual, the community, respective districts and the State as a whole.
