Land Resources Dept offices declared ‘plastic free zone’

District offices to plant 1000 trees annually

Commemorating the World Environment Day, the Land Resources Department (LRD) on Tuesday said that all offices of LRD would be declared as ‘Plastic Free Zone.’  

Additionally, a circular signed by LRD Director, Hoto Yeptho and Secretary, Y. Kikheto Sema IAS stated that each of its district offices would plant a minimum of 1000 trees annually till PMKSY projects are completed.  

“Henceforth, all LRD offices in Nagaland will use only bio-degradable and reusable cups and plates,” another point of the circular stated. The Department also committed to promote the use of jute and paper bags in the market, home and office. Further, it stated that awareness programmes on environment would be dovetailed in all LRD project activities.  

Plants 1000 Cherry trees at Thizama

Earlier, in the morning, the Department planted 1000 Cherry tree saplings at Thizama village where the village council assured to maintain and take care of 10 saplings each by every household. Thizama village has more than 100 household.  

Speaking at the World Environment Day commemoration programme at Thizama, Secretary LRD, Y. Kikheto Sema, IAS impressed upon the gathering on why the Department chose to plant Cherry trees. He said the prime reason was for a clean environment besides its majestic blossoms. He said Cherry trees help in bee keeping and has certain medicinal values. The Secretary maintained that the Cherry blossoms in huge numbers could also become a potential spot for tourist attraction.  

He regretted that God has gifted people with beautiful earth and sky yet human beings misuse it thereby causing environmental and health hazards.  

“We should all love and take care of our mother earth and live in peace with nature,” he added.  

The Secretary said that the Department has planted more than 4000 saplings in the State on Tuesday and targets to plant 20000 saplings this year. He also said that the WDT members in each district would maintain the planted saplings.  

Later, the Department also planted around 500 Cherry tree saplings at the premises of Assembly Secretariat, Kohima accompanied by NLA Secretary, K. Sekhose. Kikheto encouraged the use of drinking water in filters instead of bottled waters. He said paper cups could be reused with individual names written on it adding that plastic waste was the ‘greatest enemy of humankind environmentally.’  

He appealed the people for a clean and green environment free from plastic.
