Mizoram government announces election to Sinlung Hills Council

The Mizoram Election department on Tuesday announced the first general elections to Sinlung Hills Council (SHC), an official statement issued by the department said.

 

The date of polling to the 12–member Council will be held on November 5 from 7 am to 4 pm and re-polling, if required, will be held on November 7. The last date for filing nomination papers was fixed on October 10, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature was fixed on October 14.

 

Scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on October 11 and counting of votes would be undertaken on November 5 as soon as all ballot boxes reach constituency headquarters. Counting of re-polled votes, if required, will be held on November 7. The election process is scheduled to be completed by November 8.

 

There are 20,914 voters including 10,405  female voters in SHC as per the latest roll published on September 30. These voters would exercise franchise in 38 polling stations where polling would be conducted with ballot papers.

 

The Election Model Code of Conduct has come into effect from Tuesday in the jurisdiction of respective constituencies in SHC area and this would cover all political parties and contesting candidates, ministers, ministers of state, Members of Parliament and MLAs, and all public servants engaged in the SHC election.

 

SHC was established on July 9, 2018 a result of the peace accord signed between the Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) on April 2 that year. There are 31 villages within the jurisdiction of the Council in Hmar dominated north-east Mizoram adjoining Manipur. The Council will have 12 elected members and 2 nominated members.
