Mizoram: MURA’s indefinite hunger strike enters 14th day

Newmai News Network  Aizawl | June 22 The indefinite hunger strike called by Mizoram Underground Returnees' Association (MURA) entered the 14th day on Friday as the State government of Mizoram has not given any positive response to meet its demands.   The MURA, which is an association of ex-Mizo National Front (MNF) rebels, has been seeking fulfillment of political agreement that the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) had reached with the association before 2013 assembly elections.   Members of MURA, numbering about 16 to 20, are on hunger strike since June 6 at their office in Aizawl, demanding that the Congress party fulfills its 10-point agreement before the state assembly elections of 2013.   The hunger strike was temporarily suspended in the evening of June 15 after Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla agreed to hold talks with the leaders. However, the hunger strike resumed on June 19 evening as the State government could not give any positive response to meet the demands of the former rebel association.   Speaking to Newmai News Network, MURA president PC Lalthuama said that the leaders of the association on Tuesday met Lal Thanhawla, who refused to give any assurance on meeting their demands.   “We met the Chief Minister at his office on Tuesday. He neither wanted to look at us nor commented on measures to address our plights. He only told us to have dialogue with some ministers and officials under his chairmanship. We returned frustrated,” the MURA president rued.   Lalthamuana then said that the government intended to set up a joint action committee to look into the demands of the association for which a meeting with the Chief Minister and ministers including State Home minister R. Lalzirliana and officials will be convened by next week. He said that some of the members, four of them aged above 70 years, have become physically weak after several days of hunger strike. According to the MURA president, no government officials and medical teams have so far visited the protest site till Friday. He added that the strike will continue till their demands are met.   As per the political agreement reached between MURA and Congress party in 2013, the latter promised to rehabilitate MURA members by giving housing assistance of Rs 20 lakh each to the members.   The Congress party, has however, failed to fulfil its promises except allotting plots of land to only 43 members and giving financial assistance under the flagship programme New Land Use Policy (NLUP) to around 30 members only, Lalthuama alleged.   There are about 3,000 MURA members across Mizoram, according to the MURA president.   Among others, the agreement also stated that the Congress party will award any suitable contract work to the members, give government jobs like LDC, IV grade or muster roll employment to next of kins of MURA members and induct the members under housing loan board, corporation or commission under the State government, none of which have been fulfilled, Lalthuama said.
