Nagaland observes National Statistics Day

‘Govt streamlining data management in state’

Nagaland along with the rest of the country today observed National Statistics Day under theme “Quality assurance in official statistics.”  

In the state capital Kohima, the Directorate of Economics & Statistics commemorated the day and vowed to provide quality statistics for quality socio-economic planning and policy formulation.  

Home commissioner R. Ramakrishnan, IAS, said the government is streamlining data management in the state. He stressed on the need to have an accurate and reliable data for proper planning and policy formulation.  

Ramakrishnan also lauded the department of economics and statistics for compiling and disseminating accurate data to the users in the state.  

Touching on this year theme “Quality assurance in official statistics,” Kevileno Angami, secretary & OSD, Government of Nagaland said “If we give quality data, if we give authentic, proper information then proper decision can be taken.”  

She however said that if we give bogus and unauthentic data then the policy formulation would go wrong.  

In this, she challenged the concerned officers to focus on providing quality information so that proper decision could be taken in policy formulation.  

In recognition of the notable contributions made by Late Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of economic planning and statistical development, Government of India has designated 29th June every year as National Statistics Day in commemoration of his birth anniversary.  

This year celebrations of the Day marked the closing ceremony of year long celebrations of 125th birth anniversary of Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. June 29, 2017 marked the beginning of the 125th year of birth of Prof. Mahalanobis.  

Earlier, the function was chaired by economics & statistics director Y. Sancheo Ovung while vote of thanks was proposed by additional director R. Kronu.
