Ex-armyman arrested for 'links' with fake currency racket Kolkata, October 16 (PTI): An ex-armyman and his accomplice were arrested by the CID from Siliguri in north Bengal for their alleged links with a fake Indian currency note (FICN) racket, a senior official of the department said today.  On a tip-off, Pradip Gogoi, a former armyman and a resident of Assam's Dibrugarh district, and his accomplice Sudhir Sarkar alias Sudhir Mondal were arrested by the CID Special Operations Group late last night from Darjeeling More under Pradhan Nagar police station, the official said. Fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 44,000 were seized from their possession, he added.  "We were looking for the two for quite some time. Both of them played important roles in the FICN racket. They were involved in smuggling FICN to the north-eastern states," the CID official said.   IED found in Guwahati, close shave for children Guwahati, October 16 (PTI): A 2-kg improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered in Guwahati’s Birubari area on Saturday when children were playing with the explosive, a senior police officer said. The children of one M. Bhowmick were playing in front of their house at Sankarpur Hill area on Saturday morning when they found the object wrapped in jute ropes, the officer said. Bhomick told reporters at the site that he first thought it was a football made by children but upon finding it heavy he threw it inside the nearby forests, as his neighbours informed the police. Bomb disposal squad personnel found within the handmade IED, a bottle filled with gelatin-like substance, glass shards and nails fitted with a detonator and safety key, the officer said. The squad safely detonated the bomb in the afternoon hours. The police were investigating who was behind the act.   Assam State govt nod awaited for UN university GUWAHATI, October 16 (TNN): The Indian Federation of United Nations Associations has written to the state government seeking land to set up a United Nations university. The university, if established, will be the second in the world after a similar institute in Tokyo. Aswini Sarma, the secretary general of UN Association, Assam, said the university will be set up either in Guwahati or Shillong. The Assam government is yet to respond to the proposal, Sarma added. "We wrote to the government in 2014 and again in August this year. We are yet to get a reply. The Meghalaya government has got back to us," Sarma told reporters here on Saturday. The university will offer courses on arts, social science, management, science and UN studies at the graduation, postgraduation and research level.   Student from Arunachal commits suicide in Mathura Mathura, October 16 (PTI): A 22-year-old student of a dental college has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room here, police said. Gamang Angu, a resident of Itanagar, was a third-year student of K D Dental College. Angu allegedly committed suicide on Thursday by hanging himself to the ceiling fan of his hostel room, Senior Superintendent of Police Bablu Kumar said. In the suicide note addressed to his parents, Angu said he blames himself for his death and no one else is responsible for it, Kumar said. The police also recovered 25 cigarette packets and 40 narcotic tablets from his room, Kumar said, adding that a forensic team is investigating the matter. Angu’s laptop has been taken in by the police and investigations are going on into the matter.   BSF jawans make indecent gesture towards minor girl, arrested Aizawl, October 16 (PTI): Two BSF personnel allegedly made indecent gestures at a minor girl when she was bathing in a river at Sairang village in Mizoram following which they were arrested, the police said on Sunday. The incident took place yesterday when the girl had gone to bathe in the river near a bridge, where the two BSF personnel, a jawan and a havildar, made objectionable gestures at her. A BSF camp is located near the bridge. After the girl narrated the incident to her parents, the village elders registered a complaint at the nearby Sairang polic station. The two accused were arrested and remanded to judicial custody, Aizawl district SP Lalhuliana Fanai said. Villagers of Sairang near Aizawl took out a procession today in protest against the incident. Fanai said that the procession was peaceful and the police stopped the crowd at the Tlawng bridge near the lone Lengpui airport.
