Nagaland has a total number of 120 unrecognised villages as of July 2018. This was cited in a letter to Governor’s Secretariat from the Office of the Commissioner Nagaland.
According to the Census of India 2011, there were approximately 1400 numbers of recognised villages in the State with the population 19,78,502 persons.
Sharing the data withNagaland-based Newspaper editors and media representatives during an event organised at Raj Bhavan on August 10, Acharya said that during the recent election to State Assembly in February, these villages don’t even have a polling stations to cast their votes.
"When I raised the issue with the concerned authority, they said that arrangement will be made for the parliamentary election, but somehow it did not work out," he added.
Noting that no voters from the State should miss the opportunity to exercise their electoral franchise, the Governor called for addressing the problem urgently.
Wokha District topped the list with 22 unrecognised villages followed closely by Dimapur at 21. There are18 such villages in Peren District while Mon has 15.
The number of unrecognised villages in other districts are: Tuensang – 15, Zunheboto – 8, Longleng & Phek – 6 each, Kiphire – 4, Kohima – 3, and Mokokchung – 2.
