The 12th inter-ward football tournament organized by Peren Town Youth Organization (PTYO) kicked off on Monday here at Peren Town local ground with Masangum Heikha, PS to chief minister gracing the opening ceremony as chief guest.

The chief guest in his address said games and sports form an integral part of youth life and in order to become a sportsperson, one has to be mentally, physically and spiritually fit.

He said besides the sportsmanship spirit, if a person aspires to become a professional sportsperson or excel in games and sports, then he or she should practice regularly in the chosen game or sport as practice makes a man or sportsperson perfect. Masangum also exhorted the players to lead a healthy lifestyle and not indulge in intoxicants, which would only harm the body.

Masangum also said it was high time that the youths learn to stand on their own feet and not always be dependent on parents or others for their daily sustenance and needs. He remarked that though Peren district is blessed with abundant natural resources and fertile land, yet the people tend to be lazy in contrast to people from other districts who are prospering and forging ahead through determination and hard work.

“We should not always wait on other people to feed us. Some interior districts are not blessed with fertile soil and vegetation like Peren district, but the people in these districts are moving ahead due to hard work and determination”, he said.

Lamenting that in the present Naga society, rumours and propagandas have become the order of the day, Masangum advised the youth not to be carried away by half-truths an heresies but to follow the path of honesty, truth and integrity. He said believing and following rumours and propagandas would only lead the society backward.

Earlier, PTYO vice president, Peihauna, delivered the welcome address.   Altogether, 15 men teams and 11 women teams from the nine wards of Peren town are taking part in the football tournament.
