Amid the challenges associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Nagaland government might be staring at a huge spurt in the number of unemployed job seekers, as 82.43% of the returnees to the state are considered as working professionals.
A registry maintained by the High Powered Committee, Nagaland for COVID-19, accessed on June 23 informed that so far, a total of 15799 returnees were on the list.
As per the sector-wise data provided by the returnees, 13,024 (or 82.43%) can be considered as ‘working professionals.’
In all probability, many might have lost their jobs or on furlough.
A total of 2775 left the description on jobs either ‘blank’ or ‘no job,’ as per the HPC’s registry. However, most of them were listed in working category and seem to be answering in terms of their current status- signifying lost of their present jobs due to the lockdown.
A total of 6072 of them were listed under miscellaneous sector.
Sector-wise, the returnees included those working in hospitality and hotel management, beauty and spa, BPO/Call centre, teaching, security services, teaching, airlines etc.
Maximum in Hospitality and Beauty care sectors
A total of 1790 were listed under Hospitality denoting 11.33% of the returnees while 513 were in ‘Hotel Management.’
A total of 1390 (8.80%) were under “Beauty and Spa’ sector, followed by those working at Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) or Call Centres at 865 and Sales at 785.
Airlines, teachers and IT industry
Meanwhile, the registry showed that many of returnees (110) were in aviation industry working in the positions of Cabin Crew/Flight Attendant. It was not given whether they were permanently laid-off or on furlough.
A total of 643 also listed their profession as ‘teaching.’ Details provided in the registry informed that most were working as school or music teachers in different schools across India.
A total of 58 persons were working as ‘Analyst and Tech’ while 25 were ‘Data Entry Operator.’
The list also included 254 as Security and Helper and 254 as Receptionist and Front Desk. Incidentally, 89 of them were also listed as ‘Missionary and Social Worker’ and 19 in Construction sector.
The rest were Fashion (87), Travel (38), Media (20), and Freelancer (12).
It must noted here that addressing concerns on the economic affairs of the State, the State Government has created two strategic committees on economic affairs headed by the Chief Minister and a core group headed by the Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner.
Earlier, the State Cabinet had decided to acquire details of quarantined returnees with the objective to develop institutional mechanisms for skill upgradation and ensuring gainful employment for returnees.
