1st Patkai inter-institution c’ship concludes on high note

The 1st Patkai Trophy, an inter-institution championship, concluded here today on a high note with the Dimapur Government College (DGC) emerging as top winners and Sakus Mission College (SMC) lighting the coveted men’s football trophy. 

The final match of the trophy witnessed the SMC locking horns with Tetso College in the men’s football final. 

However, both teams remained goalless in the regular allotted time despite a spirited contest and the match was later decided in a penalty shoot-out. All the five shooters from SMC were on target during the tie-breaker, while Tetso College could not repeat its semi-final feat and lost the final 5-3. 

With five goals each, Tonching Konyak of DGC and Eneibe Thopi of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) were declared the ‘Golden Boot’ winners while Tetso’s Mhatemo Kikon was declared the best player ‘Golden Ball’ title for football. 

Meanwhile, the DGC were the undisputed champions of volleyball competition winning both the men’s and women’s category. 

In the men’s final, DGC defeated St Joseph University (SJU) while the women’s team triumphed over Tetso College.  DGC’s Reshitemjen Longkumer and Mesanwi Namdau were conferred best player of men’s and women’s volleyball respectively.  

In a competitive men’s basketball final, the SJU prevailed over the host PCC (A). It an uneventful final for the PCC as their women’s team also lost to Tetso College in the final. 

SJU’s Vibeilhoulie Suokhriewas adjudged the ‘Best Player’ in men’s basketball while Tonchingsangla Y of PCC (A) was took the title for women.  Out of 16 participating institutions, the National Institute of Technology Nagaland was conferred the ‘Best Discipline Team’ title. 

Meanwhile, gracing the closing ceremony as the Guest of Honour, Lieutenant Colonel CH Jacob, the Second-in-Command of 7 Assam Rifles Ghaspani encouraged the students to don education as their identity. 

He called upon the students and other stakeholders to contemplate on a powerful quote asserting that ‘destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or missiles, but lowering the quality of education.’

The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation, Lt Col Jacob cited. 

He also batted for perseverance as well as efficient time management, given a comparison between students from the North-East and others, especially those from Bihar.

Cultivate an identity in education so that other can emulate and respect you, he added. 

The Guest of Honour later gave away the prizes to different individual and team titles, along with Burakum of LiveNow Events. 

The 7 AR assisted in officiating several matches in the championship. 

Under the theme, “Celebrating Talents,’ the three-day 1st Patkai Trophy kicked of on March 30. As per the organiser, it was conceptualised as an annual eventto celebrate sporting talents and provide a platform to students’ community to reach out and learn from each other.

The college collaborated with LiveNow Events for the trophy while The Morung Express and @WeTheNagas are the media partners. The prizes for different competitions were sponsored by various business establishments, organisations and individuals.
