The 1st State Level Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Wushu (Sanda) Championship 2025 under the aegis of Nagaland Wushu Association (NWA) in collaboration with the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Govt of Nagaland commenced today at Pele Khezhie Indoor Stadium, Kohima.
Gracing the event as the guest of honour, Pele Khezhie, President, Nagaland Taekwondo Association, lauded NWA president KiidechoKhamo and his team and Department of Youth Resources & Sports, for organizing the State Level Wushu Championship for the first time in Nagaland.
“Winning medals is good, but what matters most is that you try your best, respect your opponents, and enjoy every match,” he told the athletes.
Sports teach us to be strong, to get up even if we fall, and to never give up. It also teaches us to be good friends and good teammates, he said.
Khezhie also told the athletes to give their best, play fair and believe in themselves. Let this championship be something you will always remember, he told the athletes.
Libemo Jami, Assistant Director, Department of Youth Resources & Sports also spoke on the occasion and assured that the department will support the growth of Wushu discipline viewing its huge scope.He stressed on the need to revive the state level sports council for overall development of sports in Nagaland.
Altogether, 93 athletes from seven districts registered for the championship.
Peren district formed the highest participants with 26, followed by Kohima- 18 , Zunheboto, Dimapur and Mokokchung with 12 each, Mon - 9 and Phek – 4.
Gabriel Khamo, Technical Secretary, NWA and 1st National Gold Medallist from Nagaland and NIS Coach from Nagaland for Wushu Discipline administered oath to the athletes.
NeibouSechu, Vice President, NWA chaired the programme while DeoHuprem, Youth Director, Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima invoked God’s blessings.
Vote of thanks was proposed by NWA general secretary Vekhozo.
The championship, which will continue till October 29, aim to promote and strengthen Wushu as a competitive sport in Nagaland, while providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and prepare for higher-level competitions.
