At least 28 people have reportedly fallen ill after attending a birthday party in Wokha district on August 3, with many of them requiring hospitalisation.
Of the affected, 21 patients were brought to the Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital (DMMDH) with symptoms including loose watery stools, vomiting, nausea, fever and abdominal pain. Nineteen of them were admitted, while two were treated on an outpatient basis.
The first patients arrived at the hospital at around 9:50 pm on August 3, approximately seven hours after attending the birthday party at around 9 am.
As of August 7, two patients remain admitted and under treatment or observation, while 17 patients have been discharged. No patients were referred to another hospital and no death has been reported in connection with the suspected food-borne illness.
According to DMMDH, patients reportedly presented with fever, hypotension, abdominal pain and headache when brought to the hospital. The hospital stated that the symptoms appeared consistent with food poisoning.
Patients reported consuming common food items including meat, dal, chick pea, pickle and papad. The hospital has identified the water source, meat, dal, pickle and chick pea as possible suspected sources at this stage.
A pickle sample has been collected for testing, while food samples have also been collected by the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (DHFW), Nagaland. The hospital has informed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and DHFW, Nagaland, regarding the cases.
DMMDH was also informed that some other affected persons were receiving treatment at private nursing homes in Wokha.
At Panacea Nursing Home, five persons were admitted and all have since been discharged. At Mhondamo Memorial Hospital, two persons were admitted and have also been discharged.
The incident is currently being treated as a suspected food-borne illness, with further findings expected following testing of the collected samples.
