Health Department officials with students of TM Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, after the distribution of free spectacles under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment on August 4.
Kohima, August 4 (MExN): Thirty-four students of TM Government Higher Secondary School (TMGHSS), Kohima, received free spectacles from the Nagaland Department of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI).
Speaking at the distribution programme, Joint Director and Programme Officer of NPCB&VI, Dr Phyantsuthung, highlighted the key initiatives under the programme, including cataract prevention, provision of reading glasses for senior citizens, school-based eye screening and promotion of eye donation.
He said the department has been receiving a positive response from schools towards eye screening programmes for students.
Dr Phyantsuthung said a computerised autorefractor is used to ensure accurate eye screening before free spectacles are provided to eligible beneficiaries.
He also informed students and teachers that the state has set a target of identifying 7,200 beneficiaries under the programme during the 2026-27 financial year.
Urging students to wear their spectacles regularly, he also advised them to take care of their eyesight by reducing screen time.
TMGHSS Principal Kelhikha Kenye thanked the Department of Health and Family Welfare for providing spectacles to students and creating awareness among students and teachers on maintaining good eye health to prevent visual impairment.
The programme was also attended by Vice Principal Er Khriezosietuo Suohu and Graduate Teacher Liza Zhimomi.
