At least 38 candidates have filed nomination papers for the first election to Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) to be held on November 5, an election official said on Thursday.

The figure could, however, increase as many constituency headquarters could not be contacted properly due to poor connectivity, the official also said.

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) forged an electoral alliance and fielded candidates in 7 and 5 constituencies respectively in the total of 12 constituencies. Congress has fielded candidates in 11 seats, while the BJP is contesting in 2 constituencies. There were 13 independent candidates till this report was filed.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is fixed on October 14.

Polling will be held on November 5 from 7 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will be held once polling is over.

A total of 20,914 voters including 10,405  female voters will exercise their franchise in 38 polling stations to decide the fate of 12 members.

SHC was established in July last year as a result of the peace accord signed between the Mizoram government and the erstwhile underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) on April 2 that year.

SHC covers as many as 31 villages in northeast Mizoram.
