The 3rd Gold Cup T20 Cricket Tournament organised by the Nepali Baptist Church, Tuensang started on January 4.

Tuensang Royals emerged victorious in the inaugural match defeating defending champions Gold Star Cricket Club (GSCC) at the Parade Ground. GSCC won the toss and elected to bowl.

The bowlers made good on the decision affecting 3 quick dismissals starting with the breaking of the opening partnership of 57. The dismissals put the pressure on the younger Royals but Baharul Islam, coming in at number 5, ensured the scoreboard kept ticking scoring a quickfire 27-ball 45 before being bowled out by JP.  GSCC restricted the score to 169 at the fall of the final wicket leaving Royals opener Mannu Kumar stranded at 42.

Chasing a seemingly gettable target, the defending champions failed to consolidate on a fine bowling performance. The pace attack of the Royals kept getting wickets making life difficult for the batsmen.

None of the batsmen could manage beyond 20 runs before folding 102 all-out handing a comfortable 67-run win to the Royals.

Baharul Islam displayed a superb all-round performance collecting 4 wickets, making him the man of the match.

An exhibition match between the Nepali Baptist Church Women’s team and Tuensang District Cricket Association (TDCA) women’s team was also organised. The much experienced TDCA team won comfortably after a brief fight back from the former.

Earlier, at the inaugural programme, special guest Chingmak Kumchuba, President of the Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU) encouraged the players to learn life values from sports. Citing from his life experience, he narrated how the values inculcated by sports instilled in him the spirit to never give up, win or lose.

Altogether five teams are participating in the tournament, which will conclude on January 6.
