24 colleges, including one from Assam to compete in the in three-day sports event
PATKAI, October 29 (MExN): The 3rd Patkai Trophy 2025, organised by Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), kicked off today at the college ground under the theme “Celebrating Talents,” bringing together colleges and institutes to foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition.
A total of 23 educational institutions from Nagaland as well as one from Assam are participating in the three-day inter-institutional championship, featuring volleyball, basketball, and badminton for both men and women, and football for men, stated a press release.
In his welcome address at the opening ceremony, PCC (A) Principal, Dr Thepfuvilie Pieru expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the day and highlighted that sports not only enhance physical health but also foster discipline and unity.

He stated that the Patkai Trophy aims to create a platform for students to showcase their God-given talents and to build stronger connections among institutions within and beyond Nagaland. He concluded by welcoming all participants and wishing for the success of the tournament.
Meanwhile, gracing the event as the inaugural guest, Tongpang Ozukum, MLA and Advisor to the Department of Water Resources, Government of Nagaland, expressed his delight at visiting Patkai for the first time, describing it as one of the ‘finest colleges in Nagaland’ that provides equal importance to both academics and extracurricular activities.
Highlighting the growing challenge of unemployment, he noted that Nagaland is among the top five states in India with the highest number of government employees. At the same time, Advisor Ozukum underscored that government job opportunities are becoming saturated.

In this connection, he encouraged the youth to channel their passion into sports and other creative fields, emphasising that games such as football, badminton, and volleyball have become integral to Naga society.
“Play with passion,” he urged, further highlighting the State’s continued efforts to promote and support sports development.
The ceremony also featured a special musical performance by Chanleishon Vashum, a presentation by the Students’ Union of PCC, and an exhibition performance by the Patkai Multi Gym.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Talisunep Jamir, Assistant Professor, Department of English, while Avono Savino, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, invoked God’s blessing for the event.
The event concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Wetshte Thopi, Assistant Professor and Dean of Students.

The championship was officially declared open with a ceremonial kick-off by Advisor Tongpang Ozukum, marking the start of the sporting event.
Following the inauguration, preliminary matches were held throughout the day across volleyball, basketball, badminton, and football.
