Only 11 students, 17 teachers in a school

Minister for School Education and Parliamentary Affairs, Tokheho Yepthomi on Saturday revealed that there were 400 excess teachers in Dimapur and added that rationalization of employees would soon be carried out in the state. Speaking during the inaugural programme of Government Higher Secondary School, Purana Bazar, Dimapur, the minister pointed out an instance in a certain school in the district where there were only 11 students with 17 teachers. Tokheho was appreciative of those villages judiciously utilizing MGNREGA funds for development purposes especially investing in educational institutions.
Pointing out that Purana Bazar village has received the highest amount of MGNREGA funds in Dimapur, he urged the village authorities to look into development affairs of the school.
The Minister expressed his desire to personally adopt Government Higher Secondary Schools of Purana Bazar and Singrijan and assured of providing laptops to Class 11 and 12 students of the two schools when their academic session starts.
Tokeho said he would put in sincere efforts to see that the two schools become models for other schools to follow. He urged the people of the area to inculcate a sense of belongingness and responsibility towards the school and reiterated his appeal to the people to discourage proxy teachers.
The Minister further informed that the State Vigilance Department was investigating into the Mid Day Meal Scheme and misuse of Rs 15 crores meant for the disabled.
DDEO Dimapur, R. Amongla Ao, GBs and various community leaders of Purana Bazar also addressed the gathering.
