43.3% tobacco users in Nagaland

According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), provided by District Tobacco Control Cell, Kohima Nagaland State records 43.3% of tobacco users; 39% smokeless tobacco users; 13.2% smokers; 8.9% both type users and 56.7% non users. 

The survey also shows the following commonly used tobacco products in Nagaland: Pan Masala with tobacco-21.1%;     Betel quid with tobacco- 17.5%; Khaini- 10.1%; Bidi- 9.9%; and Gutka- 9.4%

Prevalence by age group:

Meanwhile, as part of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the Kohima District Tobacco Control Cell (KDTCC) on Monday organized a virtual poster making event based on the theme ‘Commit to Quit’ for the students of tobacco free educational institutions.

Altogether, 57 students from 22 Tobacco Free Educational Institutions participated.

Dr Arenla Walling, District Nodal Officer, KDTCC informed that information education communication (IEC) activities were also carried out in Kohima to mark the day.

Among the many messages carried through poster making event reads; Tobacco breaks hearts; Quit smoking before it is too late- Kevisa Tetso (Government High School Jakhama), Quit Tobacco or Tobacco will make you quit your life- Juiley Daimary (Government Middle School, Aradhura), Quitters are Winners. Choose life- Shoiwe (Government Middle School, Aradhura), I would not let Tobacco destroy my life- Kekhrieneinuo (Government Middle School Botsa),  The more you use the less you live- Shaun Swu (Baptist High Kohima).
