6th edition of Unity Cup underway

Dimapur, January 16 (MExN): The 6th Unity Cup T-20 cricket tournament, organized by Nepali Baptist Church (NBC) Chümoukedima sports ministry, kicked off in Chümoukedima on January 16 under the theme ‘Solidarity for Peace’.

With 25 teams in participation, the tournament will be held from January 16 to February 3 at Chümoukedima Local ground.

Sanam Rana PT, Senior Physiotherapist (CISHR) was the special guest at the opening ceremony. In his address, Rana encouraged the players to compete in true game spirit which is not only to win but developing sports culture and realizing their hidden talents and strength.

He said that team work is the need of the hour to bring about positive change in the society. 

Samuel Mizar, convener of Unity Cup delivered the welcome address and gave a brief highlight on the foundation of the Cup. He also informed all the participating teams to follow all SOPs throughout the tournament.

Teams failing to follow the COVID-19 SOPs will be suspended from the tournament, the organizers informed.

Meanwhile, in an exhibition match on Saturday, the Gorkhas of Chümoukedima beat Chümoukedima Chamber of Commerce by 8 wickets.

Chümoukedima Chamber of Commerce decided to bat after winning the toss and set a target of 98 runs in 15 overs. Asu of Chümoukedima Chamber of Commerce scored 57 runs. Gorkhas of Chümoukedima were able to chase the target with 6 overs to spare. Robert Aley was adjudged the man of the match for his 47 runs knock. 

According to the organizers, the exhibition match was also an initiative of Unity Cup to encourage the youth in Chümoukedima Town to take part in games and sports.
