In order to ease the problem of electricity in Nagaland state, the government has allocated 95 acres of land for setting up of mega solar projects for which the Department of New and Renewable Energy (N&RE) is in discussion with various project developers.
Khriehu Liezietsu, Advisor N&RE, during an official function here last week stated that the Nagaland Electricity Regulatory Commission has designated N&RE as the state nodal agency for recommendation and registration of renewable energy in Nagaland.
The department is also making efforts to identify feasible projects related to hydro-energy, wind and biomass, he said. He said the aim of the N&RE is to harness green and clean renewable energy sources in the state for energy security, socio-economic and environmental benefits. He informed the gathering that the N&RE department is involved in development of alternative sources of energy like solar, wind, hydro, biomass etc. “The development of these sources of energy is becoming important because other natural sources of energy like coal, petroleum and natural gas are running out and becoming more and more expensive,” Liezietsu said.
Since burning of coal and petroleum products contribute to climate change and global warming which is dangerous for the existence of life on earth, it is also important to find new ways to minimize the effects, he said, and called for the role of the students “because with the right knowledge we can also harness our own natural resources.” “The energy of the sun in Nagaland is the same as in other parts of the world, the wind that blows in Nagaland is no different than the wind that blows elsewhere, the energy that our river water generates is said to be suitable for hydro-projects. Our bio-diversity is considered to be among the richest compared to many regions of the world,” he said, adding since our brain is also nothing different from the brain of other human races, it is necessary that we exercise our brain to develop means of harnessing our natural resources.
