DIMAPUR, JANUARY 15 (MExN): A rally demanding a separate district of Aboi was held at Aboi on Jauary 15. A memorandum submitted to the Nagaland Chief Minister after the rally demanded that the demand for Aboi district be granted before January 23.
In the memo, which was submitted through the ADC, Aboi HQ, the Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC), KU Aboi Unit, KU Chen Unit, and KU Longchang Unit expressed the resentment of the people of Aboi at the Nagaland Government’s move to turn down the demand for a separate district for Aboi.
“The genesis of the developmental ideas for demand and up-gradation of Aboi ADC HQ to District HQ which was initiated officially in the year 2008 and was subsequently included in the Cabinet Memo of 2011,” it recalled. It hoped that the present Government is “very much well aware of our demand and doesn't require more details and references.”
The memo further hoped that the Nagaland Government is also aware of the fact that the apex body, Konyak Union Mon had issued a representation to the State Cabinet on July 19, 2021, demanding for creation of district status bifurcating Mon District, and “which had first granted NOC to the ADDC on July 21, 2008.”
The memo questioned the Government of Nagaland on what ground has the demand been denied “despite fulfilling the criteria fit for a full-fledged district than any other districts which were declared recently.” It further expressed shock at the “declaration of three new Districts on December 18, 2021 by the Government of Nagaland, when the whole Konyaks were mourning and seeking for justice with regard to the recent incident of Oting Massacre.”
“The government has added salt to the wounds by the declaration of other districts in the midst of our sorrowful period and also by back dropping our demand,” it stated.
The memo informed the Chief Minister that “our demand has always been democratic but it has reached its elastic limit and the public has turned impatient towards the tone-deaf attitude of the government.” “Thereby, bringing to a conclusion, the response/retaliation of the citizens maybe undemocratic and ultimately the government shall be held responsible for its consequences,” it cautioned.
It demanded that the Government of Nagaland declare Aboi a full-fledged district on or before January 13, “failing to which the ADDC shall take up its own course of action.”
Earlier, the rally began with two minutes silence observed to pay respects to the victims of the Oting massacre. Invocation was pronounced by the Aboi Town Baptist Pastor’s Fellowship, followed by the Konyak anthem.
Manpon Konyak, Convenor, ADCC delivered the welcome now and President of the Konyak Mon delivered a speech. Short speeches were also presented by Chen, Longching and Aboi units of the Konyak Union, the Gaon Bura Association, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, and S Manlip Konyak, former KU President. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mana Konyak, President, Chen Area Students’ Union.
