Admission process starts at first medical college in Nagaland

The admission of the first batch of 100 MBBS students at the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the State's first medical college, began on August 20. 

The admission will be held till August 28, from 10AM to 5PM at the Academic Block of NIMSR Campus, the All India Radio (AIR) News Kohima reported on Sunday. 

Quoting the NIMSR Director cum Dean, Professor Dr Soumya Chakraborty, the report further informed that the classes for the first batch MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) will begin in first week of September.

The NIMSR was successful in getting 85 seats filled by candidates from the State of Nagaland and 15 seats were filled from All India Quota, he added.  State counselling for MBBS was conducted on August 18.

As per the ‘Fees structure & Checklist’ for the MBBS Admission 2023-24 issued by the NIMSR earlier, the cost comes to around Rs 1,39,00, including refundable deposits. 

The amount does not include examination, miscellaneous and registration fees while there separate monthly charges for students availing mess facilities. The fees will be increased 10% annually, the Checklist added.  

The first medical college in Nagaland was established as a part of a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college.

The fund sharing between the Union Government and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others. 

Under the scheme, 157 Government medical colleges were approved, including two medical colleges in Nagaland at Kohima and Mon.

The NIMSR, located at Phriebagei, Kohima, was approved under Phase-I of the scheme at a total approved cost of Rs 189 crore and the Union Government’s share at Rs 170.10 crore, while the rest Rs18.90 crore was State Government’s share. 

The Government Medical College in Mon was approved under Phase-III of the scheme at a total cost of Rs 325 crore and the central share amounts to Rs 292.50 crore.

Out of this, Rs 242.50 crore has already been released to the State Government, the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar informed in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on August 4.
