Mokokchung | July 1

In a bid to beautify the village area in a long term process, the Yimchalu VDB today initiated a noble venture where every family (or individual) was given the opportunity to plant and adopt five to ten ornamental trees along the roads which the planter has to take care till its full maturation and well-being.

Yimchalu village, which falls under Sungratsü village jurisdiction, is located some twelve kilometers away from Mokokchung town and is inhabited mostly by farming entrepreneurs.

“Our main objective is to make the people to have a sense of belongingness, a sense of ownership, by adopting the trees and taking care of it, we want to ensure that the trees would grow because now it is the responsibility of those who have adopted the tree to see to it,” said Bendang Walling, the Yimchalu village VDB Secretary. He said that if the adopted trees do not grow or withers out, those who have adopted the trees would replace the plant. This tree adopting programme was purely initiated by the Yimchalu VDB.

“After a few years, this stretch of road will be dotted with ornamental trees because we (the villagers) have agreed to ensure that we the trees will grow, be tended and will be allowed to grow,” said Bendang Walling. He also disclosed that this adoption of trees is just an initiative towards the conservation of biology with a different approach.

“Our aim is simple, we do not want to say that we planted lakhs of trees; we have planted a few hundreds and we want to ensure and see to it that the trees grow. Now, with this adoption initiative, all those who have planted the trees have to see that the tree grows up, and surely the trees will grow,” said a retired teacher, who is a Yimchalu village founding member.

Meanwhile, the Yimchalu VDB Secretary Bendang Walling, while appreciating the visitors to the different farms and resting place at Yimchalu village, strongly appealed all the visitors to maintain a sense of decorum, a sense of cleanliness and a sense of responsibility so that ‘together the Yimchalu village will grow up to be a model village’ in Mokokchung district. He strongly lamented the littering by visitors and appealed all the visitors to be mindful of where to dispose their wastes so as not to disturb the ecology with the non-biodegradable wastes.
